Abstract

On November 14, 2002, the Congregación para la Educación Católica [Congregation for Catholic Education] De Novo Codice decree was released. This decree establishes new rules for the teaching of ecclesiastical law at colleges of ecclesiastical law created by this Congregation and the Institutes of Ecclesiastical Law. The main innovation is that such studies will last three years (or six semesters) preceded by a two-year (or a foursemester) philosophical-theological educational curriculum, which will start from the 2003-2004 academic year. In this article, the new discipline and the new curriculum as announced by those colleges are described; at the same time, an assessment of both the positive and negative aspects of such a decree is carried out.
